So we need the help of Navy, BFAR, and the maritime police para pangalagaan na yan.

(Allan Manansala / Ruth Navales, UNTV News)

AirAsia crash report won’t include black box data: investigator

(Reuters) – A preliminary report into last month’s crash of an AirAsia passenger jet that killed 162 people will not include an analysis of the black box flight recorders, an Indonesian investigator said on Tuesday.

The National Transportation Safety Committee will submit its initial findings this week to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on AirAsia’s first fatal crash.

The Airbus AIR.PA A320-200 vanished from radar screens on Dec. 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-biggest city, to Singapore. There were no survivors.

A multinational search and recovery operation has recovered 70 bodies so far and hoped to find more after locating the fuselage of the plane. But days of rough weather and poor underwater visibility have hampered navy divers’ efforts.

The preliminary report, which the ICAO requires within 30 days of the date of the accident, will include “information on the plane, the number of passengers and other information like that”, NTSC investigator Suryanto told Reuters.

It will not include analysis from the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, both of which were recovered by divers from the bottom of the Java Sea.

Data from radar and the aircraft’s two “black box” flight recorders is providing investigators with a clearer picture of what occurred during the final minutes of Flight QZ8501.

Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan told a parliamentary hearing last week that, based on radar data, the plane had climbed faster than normal in its final minutes, and then stalled.

The NTSC will hold an annual media conference this week to talk about the agency’s achievements over the past year. The agency is not expected to discuss details of its investigation into the AirAsia crash, said NTSC head Tatang Kurniadi.

The final report on the investigation, which will be made public, must be filed within a year.

(Reuters) – At least nine people were killed and dozens were unaccounted for after a Taiwanese TransAsia Airways plane with 58 passengers and crew on board crash-landed in a Taipei river on Wednesday, officials and domestic media said.

Dramatic pictures taken by a motorist and posted on Twitter showed the plane cartwheeling over a motorway close to the airport soon after the turboprop ATR 72-600 aircraft took off.

Television footage showed passengers wearing life jackets wading and swimming clear of the river.

Emergency rescue officials in inflatable boats crowded around the partially submerged fuselage, lying on its side in the river, trying to help those on board.

The civilian aeronautic authority said soon after the crash that two people had been killed. Taiwanese television later reported the death toll had risen to nine.

The aeronautics authority reported 16 people had been rescued, meaning as many as 33 people were still missing.

Other Taiwanese government authorities said the plane was carrying 58 passengers and crew, including 31 tourists from mainland China.

The weather appeared to be clear when the plane took off. Television pictures also showed some damage to a bridge next to the river, with small pieces of the aircraft scattered along the road.

The crash-landing is the latest in a string of mishaps to hit Asian carriers in the past 12 months. An AirAsia jet bound for Singapore crashed soon after taking off from the Indonesian city of Surabaya on Dec. 28, killing all 162 people on board.

Also last year, a Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared and one of its sister planes was downed over Ukraine with a combined loss of 539 lives.

TransAsia is Taiwan’s third-largest carrier. One of its ATR 72-500 planes crashed while trying to land at Penghu Island last year, killing 48 of the 58 passengers and crew on board.

The plane involved in Wednesday’s mishap was among the first of the ATR 72-600s, the latest variant of the turboprop aircraft, that TransAsia received in 2014.

They are among an order of eight placed by TransAsia in 2012. The aircraft have 72 seats each. The planes are mainly used to connect Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, to the island’s smaller cities.

The airline also operates Airbus A320 and A330 planes on domestic and international services.

ATR is a joint venture between Airbus and Alenia Aermacchi, a subsidiary of Italy’s Finmeccanica services.

(Reuters) – The death toll from a TransAsia Airways plane that crashed into a Taipei river shortly after taking off has risen to 31, Taiwanese officials said on Thursday, and could rise further with 12 people still missing.

TransAsia Flight GE235, carrying 58 passengers and crew, lurched between buildings, clipped an overpass with its port-side wing and crashed upside down into the shallow river shortly taking off from a downtown Taipei airport on Wednesday.

Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) said 15 people survived. Three of those who were rescued were from a group of 31 tourists from mainland China.

The pilot and co-pilot of the turboprop ATR 72-600 were among those killed, the CAA said.

(Mon Jocson / UNTV News)

DOH to OFWs in MERS-CoV affected countries: Take test before going home

FILE PHOTO: An international flight at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (RYAN MENDOZA / Photoville International)

MANILA, Philippines – As summer vacation approaches, an influx of Filipinos from abroad especially overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are also expected to arrive in the country this season.

This is the reason why the Department of Health (DOH) is appealing to OFWs especially those who are health care workers in countries affected by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus (MERS-CoV), to undergo examination or certain screen tests before going home.

DOH is expecting a rise in MERS-CoV infection cases in the Middle East countries during this period.

“For the past 2 years, it has been observed that the peak of the MERS-CoV outbreak is during this period of the year. That’s why we call on our fellow Filipinos not to go home if they still haven’t received the result of their MERS-CoV test,” Rowena Capistrano, DOH Surveillance Unit chief said.

The health department stressed that the safety of the family and the community is at stake that is why they want to be sure that arriving OFWs are not infected by the virus.

The Bureau of Quarantine is also on top of the situation, guarding the entry points of the country.

“We want to be sure that they don’t have the symptoms, they don’t have fever or cough when they come home and for them to avoid any hassles,” Capistrano added.

“We also caution them that it is very important that they completely fill up the medical checklist. They should include even their contact numbers just in case,” Dr. Tomas Octavio of OWWA said.

DOH said, even Philippine embassies are very thorough in reminding our compatriots in MERS-CoV affected countries to secure medical certificates before they travel back to the Philippines.

Since January, DOH was able to record only a single case of a MERS-CoV infected person entering the country but the patient is already treated and now out of the hospital.

The health agency is also reminding the public, that unlike other diseases, MERS-CoV cannot be easily transmitted from one person to another.  The public must just always maintain proper hygiene and improve the body’s resistance.

NAIA to use new full body scanner this month

Manila, Philippines – Compared to the old scanner, the new full body scanner is more reliable in inspecting passengers coming through the airport.

The body scanner makes use of an advanced millimeter-wave technology which detects concealed objects on a person’s body.

The technology makes use of low-frequency radiation, making the scanner safe even for pregnant women and those with body implants.

Among others, the new body scanner can detect ceramics, liquids, metals, narcotics, and explosives.

Fourteen eqo portal systems were procured by the Manila International Airport Authority last year. These were delivered late in June and were installed this month.

A passenger going through the body scanner will simply have to turn – 360 degrees – inside the open booth and scan results will show immediately on the operator’s screen indicating the location of concealed items.

DPSPI president Jose Mari Castañeda said, “It can improve (inspection) because there is no need for frisking. If your clear you will not be touched.”

Privacy is also ensured as the system has a mode that will present only the outline of the body.

Full body scanners are placed only at the final security screening checkpoints of each terminal. There are three units at terminal 1; five units at terminal 2; another five units at terminal 3; and one unit at terminal 4.

The full body scanners will serve as a security enhancement augmenting the 26 walkthrough metal detectors also at the final check in of the terminals.

Full body scanners cost 12 million pesos each. Airport authorities remind passengers not to bring prohibited items in the airport to avoid inconvenience.

(Rovic Balunsay / Photoville International)

“So far we have seen improvement with regards to the travel time at least 10 minutes but based form the feedback more than 10 minutes na save nila… We will try to improve that all the way from Monumento up to Pasay City.”

Anang HPG chief, “Yung mga huli huli (this Monday) i-sinantabi muna, we gave them warning and by tomorrow (Tuesday) you expect some apprehensions.”

“Unti-unti the leeway that I can give myself is 10 minutes improvement in travel time. Kapag gumanda, OK lang. Pero i-improve ng iimprove yan, hopefully, with the cooperation of police, commuters and drivers,” pahabol ni HPG C/Supt. Arnold Gunnacao. (GRACE CASIN / UNTV News)

(Reuters Health) – Helmet-wearing motorcycle riders are less likely to hurt their heads in accidents, but end up with more injuries to other parts of their bodies, suggests new research.

Researchers write in JAMA Surgery that the results may be due to helmeted riders being more likely to survive high-force crashes than people who don’t wear helmets, and ultimately end up with more extensive injuries.

“The fact that injury patterns are different makes a lot of sense, because the helmets are going to help you survive,” said Dr. Adil Haider, of the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“A lot of people have all these torso injuries because their head is saved,” said Haider, who wasn’t involved in the new study.

While researchers knew helmets decreased injuries and death related to motorcycle trauma, they didn’t know whether or how the protective head gear might affect injuries to other body parts.

The authors write that loosening restrictions on helmets in some U.S. states allowed them to study how wearing head protection may influence other injuries.

For the study, they used national data from 2007 to 2010 on almost 86,000 people with some sort of motorcycle-related trauma. The researchers paid particularly close attention to the number and extent of injuries to people’s heads and necks, torsos, spines and extremities.

Overall, the researchers found helmeted motorcycle riders were about half as likely to end up with head injuries, compared to those who weren’t wearing protection. Helmeted riders were also less likely to die.

Helmeted riders were more likely to have injuries to the chest and extremities than riders who weren’t wearing helmets, however.

Other than saving the lives of riders during high-force accidents, another explanation for increased injuries to other body parts could be that helmeted riders feel more secure and end up driving at higher speeds, the researchers, led by Indiana University’s Dr. Jeff Lastfogel, write.

There was no difference in the time people spent in a hospital regardless of whether they were helmeted.

Dr. David Ripley, who was not involved in the research, cautioned, though, that the study can’t really say if people ended up going home after being in the hospital. Some may, for example, have been transferred to a long term care center.

“These people are still hospitalized, but they are not in the acute care hospital,” said Ripley, who is medical director of brain injury medicine and rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

He said that policymakers should consider the cost of additional care for people who don’t wear helmets and likely end up with head injuries.

“From a public health perspective, policymakers should recognize the increased cost associated with these individuals and respond with the appropriate public policy,” he said.

Additionally, Ripley said, he recommends as much protective gear as possible – including helmets.

Boom Panot.”

Aside from that, we are also looking into… saan kaya ito pwede mag-start, aside from the initial screening? There are sources claiming that as soon as they step before the entrance, eh meron na. We are looking into possible scenarios.”

(BIANCA DAVA / UNTV News)
