MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have ordered the Bases Conversion and Development Authority to fast track the construction of the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10.
It is a private-public partnership project that links the Segment 9 of Mac Arthur Highway to Valenzuela and C-3 Road in Caloocan City.
The P10.8 billion road project is 5.8 kilometers long.
The date for the Segment 10’s completion is supposed to be next year.
However, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said that the road project has to be completed this year because motorists need to use it at the soonest possible time.
“Dapat lang hindi na iniinspeksyon ngayon ito. Dapat pinapakinabangan na, kaya itinutulak para matapos, (This should be past inspection by now. Motorists should be able to use it now. That’s why we are pushing for its early completion),” he said.
The NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 is now more than fifty percent complete.
The said road project is expected to shorten the travel time of trucks driving from the Manila Port area to provinces in Central and Northern Luzon.
The Manila North Toll Ways Corporation estimates that 40,000 to 60,000 vehicles can ply through the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10.
“From Manila, you can arrive to NLEX in 10 minutes. The good thing about this project is that, trucks coming from the port area can ply through this Harbor Link going to NLEX. This would ease traffic congestion on Edsa and C5,” DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said.
The DPWH is now processing the acquisition of right of way in areas covered by the said project.
Despite having only eight months left to finish the construction of the Segment 10, transportation and public works officials are confident that the said project can be completed before the year ends. — Joan Nano | UNTV News & Rescue
